Development Squad Pre-Season Match Report - Chelsea 3 Hertha Berlin 0

Chelsea 3 Hertha Berlin 0
Callum Hudson-Odoi scored twice as our development squad ran out winners in Berlin but there were mixed fortunes overall on the continent as our Under-18s were beaten in Denmark.
Joe Edwards took the oldest of our academy age groups to the German capital as pre-season preparations continue ahead of the new campaign, with Hertha Berlin the opponents in the east of the country.
Dujon Sterling, Reece James and Jacob Maddox all started following their recent return to training after helping England to triumph at the Under-19 European Championship. However, 16-year-old forward Hudson-Odoi (pictured top) provided the decisive contributions in the first period as he opened the scoring after four minutes and then added a second just after the half-hour mark from the penalty spot.
Juan Castillo had earned the spot-kick following good work down the left, while Cole Dasilva’s intervention to clear Fabio Mirbach’s effort off the line proved equally important for the Blues. Hertha grew stronger after the restart and Mirbach threatened again to reduce the deficit, forcing an impressive save from Mitchell Beeney.
Yet as the clock ticked towards the game’s conclusion, Harvey St Clair notched a third goal for the visitors, who claimed a second successive pre-season victory.
Jody Morris and his Under-18s were also in action in Europe, where they were beaten 3-0 by their counterparts from FC Copenhagen. The youngsters return to Cobham for their penultimate pre-season friendly against Portsmouth this weekend.
