Having moved to Chelsea from Fulham in 2008, Drew Spence progressed through the Centre of Excellence and is now an established member of the first team.
A powerful player who can operate across the midfield positions, she possesses a fantastic range of passing and offers a real aerial threat.
Spence’s impressive form throughout the 2015 season ensured she was a regular in the team as Emma Hayes’s side secured the FA WSL title and FA Women’s Cup.
A midfield trio along with Katie Chapman and Millie Bright proved difficult for opposition teams to play through, but there was a lot more to their combination than that, with no shortage of quality on the ball from the three players.
Spence started the Women’s FA Cup final in August 2015, when the Blues overcame Notts County at Wembley courtesy of a 1-0 win, and she was an integral member of the side throughout the league campaign.
In one of the early games in the season Spence scored a brace as we beat Bristol Academy 4-0, and she grew in stature with every fixture, making 24 appearances in 2015.
As well as playing an important role during the Double-winning campaign, Spence enjoyed her first taste of Champions League football when involved in matches against Glasgow City and Wolfsburg.
She was rewarded for her fine form at club level with a first England cap in October 2015, coming on as a sub in a 2-1 defeat to China.
Spence then committed her long-term future to the club by signing a two-year contract in November 2015.
The highlight of her 2016 season was a spectacular early-season goal against Aston Villa which had a hint of the Dennis Bergkamp about it. She also netted a brace in a topsy-turvy 6-3 win over Liverpool, finishing the campaign with three goals from 17 appearances.
Spence was rewarded with another new contract in the summer of 2017, which came off the back of a sustained spell of excellence during the Spring Series. An intense pre-season fitness campaign certainly brought out the best in the midfielder as she embarked upon a six-match scoring streak at the beginning of the season.
Her stunning last-gasp equaliser against Birmingham City in the FA Cup semi-final was a real coming-of-age moment; though it ultimately resulted in penalty shoot-out heartache. Spence continued to show a clinical streak in front of goal. She finished as our leading scorer in all competitions over the course of the 2017 Spring Series with seven goals from 10 appearances, only four of which were starts.
