Mitchell Beeney |
Date of birth: 3 October 1995
Place of birth: Leeds
Position: Goalkeeper
First team squad number: 33
International levels played at: England Under-20s, Under-19s
Mitchell joined Chelsea at Under-12 level from Gillingham and progressed steadily through the ranks before making his youth team debut as a 15-year-old. He was a regular for Adi Viveash’s Under-18s the following season while still a schoolboy and stepped up to become first-choice in his debut year as a scholar in 2012/13.
He made an Under-21 debut in October of that campaign and got his first taste of European football in the inaugural NextGen Series competition. Beeney was an ever-present in the Youth Cup run, making a number of key saves in the first leg of the semi-final against Liverpool. The young Blues were eventually beaten over two legs by Norwich City in the final.
He stepped up to work full-time with Dermot Drummy’s Under-21s in 2013/14, sharing goalkeeping duties with Jamal Blackman, while also featuring prominently in the Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League competitions. He missed the first leg of the Youth Cup final against Fulham due to involvement with Jose Mourinho’s first team squad, though returned for the second leg triumph at Stamford Bridge.
The 2014/15 campaign was similarly productive for Beeney, who split his time between working with the first team as a third-choice goalkeeper and playing for the Under-21s.
Mitchell, whose father Mark has worked at the club as goalkeeping coach for the Academy and Under-21s since 2001, signed a new contract in February 2014, committing him to the club until the end of the 2017/18 season.
In January 2016 he moved to Newport County in League Two on a one-month loan during which he made four appearances. In February his loan spell was briefly extended before he returned to Chelsea for the remainder of the campaign.
In June 2016 it was announced he would spend the first half of the coming season at League Two Crawley Town, managed by his former coach with Chelsea Academy teams Dermot Drummy. He made four appearances before returning to Chelsea at the end of the loan.
